Monterey County Supervisors today/Tuesday unanimously passed the first reading of a tobacco and cannabis smoking ban, including vaping, at all county parks, buildings and parking lots.
Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo proposed the ban, which will be subject to a second reading and changes before it becomes law.
Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties are other nearby jurisdictions already have similar bans in effect.
Tobacco smoking remains the largest preventable cause of death in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control says nearly half-million Americans die from tobacco use every year.
