May 3, 2016: UC Santa Cruz Student Pleads Not Guilty to Vehicular Manslaughter

(07:46) SANTA CRUZ COUNTY – A UC Santa Cruz student has pleaded not guilty to DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter for her alleged role in a double fatal crash in Moss Landing. The incident occurred in late March on Highway 1 near Molera Road.  19-year-old Lynnea Hernandez was driving southbound when she veered into northbound traffic, striking a Mazda. The driver of the Mazda, 24-year-old Nikolas Malliarodakis, was pronounced dead at the scene. One of Hernandez’s passengers, 19-year-old Lilian Scott, died from her injuries two days after the crash. Hernandez is suspected of being under the influence of marijuana and vicodin at the time of the incident. She is due back in court on June 1 to set a date for a preliminary hearing.
