Major Demolition Begins at Fort Ord 09-06-18 11:30 DC

A $30-million-dollar construction project began Wednesday at the former Fort Ord in Seaside.

The plan for this stage is to remove about 30 buildings. State senator Bill Monning said the money is being spent to remove the buildings as well as the hazardous substances left inside them.

After the 30 buildings are demolished there will still be 100 that need to go. The city of Seaside hopes retail space and offices will take the place of the former military buildings.

Monning said the development will bring food and services closer to students at CSU Monterey bay.
