a few emergency responders have been recognized for outstanding service. The monterey county peace officers association awarded its medal of valor to seaside police sergeant bruno dias. Sergeant dias was honored for his efforts to secure a neighborhood and save an injured woman last june during an armed standoff. Also receiving an award for exemplary service (from the monterey county fire chiefs association), was seaside firefighter of the year, Jason hicks, and volunteer firefighter of the year john blatnik.
