A major project to replace several water mains in santa cruz is set to begin tonight. The work will be done overnight, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the first phase of the project will replace a water main under river street. That work is set to be completed in late September, with additional mains then scheduled for replacement in october. The entire project will last into 2012.the work is being done by the city of santa cruz water department and mountain cascade, incorporated. santa cruz’s oldest water main was installed in 1912.
