The trial for a Las Lomas man charged in connection with the fatal drive-by shooting of a Santa Cruz man began this week. 21-year-old Fernando Mendoza-Avila was crossing the Freedom Boulevard overpass in May 2012 when he was allegedly shot by 23-year-old Christopher Herrera. The two men who were in the car with Herrera the night of the shooting have pleaded guilty to charges related to the murder. Prosecutors said the suspects believed the victim was openly crossing gang boundaries.
