a juvenile gray whale was seen swimming under the santa cruz wharf earlier this week. the whale is thought to be the same undernourished cetacean seen entangled in netting in southern california. experts say that a gray whale this time of year is rare because they migrate through the bay in winter. it is believed the gray whale is trying to nourish itself on the abundant anchovies, which are not a usual food source for gray whales, before attempting the migration to alaska.
