On December 10th, the Santa Cruz City Council is expected to decriminalize the use of entheogenic substances, including so-called magic mushrooms and other hallucinogenic plants. The move would follow Oakland’s recent decision to make it legal to use the substances, some of which remain illegal under state and federal law.
Athonia Capelli is a local proponent of decriminalizing the plants. The local resolution would not allow sales of the substances, which Capelli says can be quite expensive for users. She said that she hopes decriminalization will bring prices down.
