A suspect has been arrested on sexual assault charges. In January of 2018 a 21-year-old woman was asleep in a vehicle outside her friends’ house on 26th Avenue in the Live Oak area of Santa Cruz. A person she did not know, entered the car and sexually assaulted her. The victim fought off her attacker and activated her car alarm which caused him to flee. Deputies responded but were unable to find the suspect. The victim participated in a sexual assault examination, which resulted in a DNA match. On Wednesday, 29-year-old Elias Monroy was arrested at his home in Brookdale for a sexual assault and attempted rape.
