The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office has reported a larger than expected turn out for Saturday’s gun buy back event. The county had set aside 40 thousand dollars to fund the buy back at its Santa Cruz and Watsonville locations. The funding ran out about half way through the event, however many participants turned over unwanted firearms just for safety purposes, including a Capitola resident with 97 firearms. A total of 470 guns including 17 assault weapons were collected. The firearms will be analyzed for connections to criminal cases before being recycled.
