Monterey Council Unanimously Votes to Consider Sales Tax Increase 10-17-19 00:52 DC 6

The Monterey City Council this week voted unanimously to consider declaring a fiscal emergency that would clear the way for an emergency election in March 2020. Voters would be asked to improve a one-half-percent (0.5%) sales tax increase.

City Manager Hans Uslar said the increase would not affect medicines, groceries, or pharmaceuticals. If approved the increase would generate about $5-million in new revenue each year to help Monterey deal with a growing deficit that is expected to top $5-million within a few years.
