Monterey county is urging residents not to flush used hand sanitizing wipes. Sanitation departments have been reporting sewer back ups due to hand wipes flushed down toilets. Even hand wipes labeled as flushable are overwhelming Monterey’s sewage treatment facilities, where workers are having to rake the wipes out of treatment tanks to prevent the wipes from clogging the facilities pumps. Workers warn that sewage back ups could take place if more hand wipes are flushed into the system.
