Local Company Awarded Gates Money 11-20-18 17:55 DC

A local company, called Two Pore Guys, says it has received a $2.8 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop molecular diagnostic tests for tuberculosis.

The 18-month grant will fund proof-of-concept work to determine if the company’s nanopore technology could provide an easy-to-use, sensitive and low-cost device compatible with automated wireless reporting in parts of the world with limited resources.

The company employs more than 100 here in Santa Cruz.

Tuberculosis is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide. An estimated 10 million people contracted the disease last year and late detection is a significant challenge
