January 15, 2016: Ruling Upheld in Wrongful Death Claim Against UC Regents

(09:07) SANTA CRUZ – An appeals court in San Jose has upheld a ruling affirming that the University of California is not liable for the death of a UC Santa Cruz student. In February 2011, 21-year-old Adrian Burgueno was riding his bicycle down the Great Meadow Bikeway when he crashed and sustained a fatal head injury. In 2012, attorneys filed a wrongful death claim against the UC regents. The lawsuit claimed that university officials knew the bike path was hazardous and failed to address the problem. A Santa Cruz County Superior Court judge ruled in favor of the university. This week, judges in the Sixth Appellate District Court of Appeal upheld the ruling. (S.G.)
