The California Highway Control says failed brakes are the likely cause of yesterday’s big accident on southbound Highway 1, south of River Street. Investigators say 28-year-old Hector Castaneda of San Jose was driving a semi-rig when he encountered stopped traffic around 10 AM.
Witnesses reported smoking brakes as Castaneda tried to stop his truck, which ultimately caused a 21-vehicle accident and reportedly injured 11 people, one seriously. The accident remains under investigation and the CHP says no charges have been filed
