The annual quarantine of all publicly harvested mussels along the California coast, came a month earlier than usual this year. The quarantine’s early start is said to be after elevated levels of domoic acid and paralytic shellfish poisoning was recently detected during state testing. Officials say poisoning from eating mussels can lead to severe illness, including coma and death. The mussel quarantine runs through October 31st and applies to sport harvested mussels along the coast, including all bays, harbors and estuaries. Commercially harvested shellfish, however, are not included in the annual quarantine.
