August 24, 2016: F8 Crusader Jet Found in the Monterey Bay

(12:00) Monterey – A piece of a jet engine was discovered two years ago at the bottom of the Monterey Bay.  The Monterey Bay Aquarium Researchers Institute (MBARI) found several large objects on their sonar as they were taking a sweep of the bay.  The MBARI scientists submitted the pieces to Marine Operations Deputy Director, Chris Gerch, to get answers on their findings.  It wasn’t until recently that pieces to the puzzle came together.  Gerch posted pictures of the objects on an aviation website and quickly learned that the pieces were parts of an engine from a F8 Crusader Jet.  The F8 Crusader Jet’s were used as a gun fighting plane in Korea and Vietnam.      Researchers are now trying to uncover which plane the engine came from as they look through naval records.
