With the National Weather Service recently issuing a Coastal Flood advisory due to king tides, those along coastal areas should be on the lookout for tall waves and low-laying roads becoming inaccessible.
Rachel Kippen of O’Neill Sea Odyssey explains what a king tide is.
“[King tides are the] alignment of the sun and the moon at its most extreme every single year and pulls in those tides. It usually happens in winter”, Kippen said.
Rachel also mentions that the king tides are a “teaching tool” for conservationists who are looking to demonstrate the effects of sea level rise.
