A retired UC-Santa Cruz professor is advising a citizen’s inquiry into radioactive contamination at the former naval shipyard in San Francisco’s Bayview/Hunters Point neighborhood.
Prof Dan Hirsch, the university’s retired director of nuclear policy, says a study of contamination caused by paint removed from ships involved in Pacific nuclear testing was falsified and 90 percent of shipyard property was never tested.
Hirsch last night presented his findings to a citizens group that hopes to force the Navy to fully-clean the federal Superfund site.
