Sand City’s police department has six officers to patrol a city that covers just over one-half of one square mile and was home to only 387 residents in 2017. Its crime statistics, however, makes Sand City seem like a much larger place.
The Monterey County community is largely surrounded by the City of Seaside and has just released its 2019 crime statistics.
According to police, it was a busy year, with:
- 631 crime cases
- 422 arrests
- 21 DUI arrests
- 1,355 incident cases
- 1,246 field interviews
- More than one pound of crystal meth seized
- 5 ounces of powder cocaine or cocaine base seized
- 3 ounces of Heroin seized
- 5 guns seized
- 553 pills seized
Sand City’s role as a predominately business community with larger retail stores, appears to skew its crime stats. The Census finds that fewer than 400 people live there.
