Vellela vellelu Washing Up On Beaches – 04/22/15 22:45 S.S.

Blue, jellyfish-like, by-the-wind sailors have been washing up on beaches off the west coast, with a high concentration of them in the Monterey Bay. The Velella vellela have a triangular ridge that acts as a sail, and they live on the surface of the water (and feed on plankton). The offshore winds appear to be responsible for bringing them in close to shore (and into the Elkhorn Slough too).
