Vegetable Recalls and Why They Happen 09.09.2020 0900 5 JS

With the recent onion recall, many are left wondering why such vegetable recalls happen on a large scale.

Jamie Smith, local chef and businessman, explains why that is the case…

“In general, they’re just urging people that bought onions during a certain timeframe to throw [the onions] out. It’s kind of a bummer but it’s what happens when you have large scale processing”, Smith said.

“There’s growers and producers that produce about 80% of the United States onions and carrots. When there is a foodborne illness outbreak in those two vegetable sectors, it’s very widespread, because they are the ones distributing the majority of the [vegetables] in the US”, Jamie added.

Smith went on to recommend buying local produce as it involves less transit and is less likely to end up in a cross-contamination recall.
