September 9, 2016: Salinas Death Penalty Overturned

(18:26) SALINAS- The California Supreme Court voted unanimously to overturn the death penalty sentence for a man found guilty of a 1994 triple homicide in Salinas. Daniel Sanchez Covarrubias was sentenced to death for the murders of three family members, an 11 month old girl was also shot but survivied. The Court upheld Covarrubias’ murder convictions but the decision sends the case back to Monterey County Superior Court for a new penalty phase. Salinas mayor Joe Gunter was one of the homicide detective assigned to the case.
