A Santa Cruz county jail inmate died last week, information which the sheriff’s department is releasing today. On October 15, 46-year-old Raul Mata, an inmate at the Santa Cruz County jail, died from a self-inflicted injury sustained last month.
Mata was immediately transported to a hospital after the injury on September 28, where he was treated for several weeks before he died.
Mata was in custody in relation to a 2004 murder case out of Florida. An autopsy determined his cause of death was due to complications following a self-inflicted wound to the left groin.
