A Santa Cruz firefighter received a letter of commendation Tuesday for saving a group of surfers while he was off-duty.
On Sept 28th, Central Fire Protection District firefighter Dustin Marty was driving on East Cliff Drive. He saw a group of 10 surfers heading to the water. Due to weather conditions, the firefighter said he parked his vehicle and donned his wetsuit to go check on the surfers.
When Marty got to the beach, all 10 surfers were in trouble in the water. He then entered the water and rescued them one-by-one.
One of those Marty rescued credited the firefighter with saving 10 lives.
