With the repopulation of communities affected by the CZU August Lightning Complex fire, several shelters across Santa Cruz County have started to shut their doors.
Stafanie Fontana, board member of the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, shares how many animals and people remain, and how the Fairgrounds are holding up…
- 200 horses down to about 10, with 5 of those being mini horses
- 500 chickens/rabbits/birds, 300 goats, 20 to 3 exotic animals
- A handful of holdouts, but “we’re okay with that”
- 700 people were initially sheltered at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, but that number dropped to 72 people.
- The Fairgrounds will be absorbing evacuees from other shelters that have begun closing
Those interested in donating to help assist evacuees who remain are encouraged to visit the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds website or give them a call at (831) 724-5671.
