City officials in Monterey say they do not plan to replace a plaque that honored a confederate general. The plaque was outside Colton Hall, and recognized General Robert S Garnett, who designed the California State Seal. A local historian suggested that the toppling of statues, and the dismantling of plaques, won’t get the point across nearly as well as voting (and getting to the root of the issues).
The historian further suggested that if memorials are to be dismantled, they need to be considered on a case-by-case basis.
