(11:15) Santa Cruz – A Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge has approved the request for a third gender option “nonbinary” for a resident. 55 -year-old Kelly Keenan, of Ben Lomond, was granted a third gender option “nonbinary” from Judge Robert Atack on September 26th. This is the first legal document in California history with a third gender option, making Keenan the second in U.S. history. The term nonbinary is used to describe people who do not identify as a man or woman, and for those who are a combination of genders. Keenan was born with a condition known as Swyer syndrome. The syndrome prevents the body from producing sex hormones. There are five other nonbinary petitions in the process of being submitted to San Francisco, Alameda, Santa Clara, and Sacramento counties in the next few weeks.
