(06:38) MONTEREY – A statue of Saint Junipero Serra was found decapitated at Monterey’s Lower Presidio Park Thursday morning. The incident comes weeks after the saint was canonized by Pope Francis. The canonization has been opposed by some who criticize Serra’s treatment of Native Americans. Another statue of Serra was vandalized at the Carmel Mission, just days after the canonization. The incident is under investigation. In the meantime, Monterey police have increased patrols in the area. (S.G.)
