Santa Cruz police say they have received several reports of political signs opposing the rent control and just cause eviction proposal Measure M being stolen from residents’ yards. Stealing political signs is illegal and police say a fine of up to $1,000 is possible.
In a Facebook post, police said that in one case, a vandal tore up a “No on Measure M” sign in the front yard of a home and threw the pieces of the sign onto the victim’s porch. The vandal also tossed around the doormat, knocked over plants, and left a large rock on the front steps.
Police say that anyone caught stealing a political sign will be charged with a crime. To report stolen or vandalized political signs, call 831-471-1131.
