Gov. Gavin Newsom yesterday gave an update on the state’s wildfire preparedness plans, ahead of today’s (Thurs) release of his proposed state budget.

During his Wednesday COVID-19 briefing, the governor said his budget includes “enhancements for wildfire preparation and preparedness across the board as well as suppression strategies and opportunities to be more resilient in our recovery strategies.” (Newsom said.)

From January to May 10, California has experienced 1,130 wildfires, a 60% increase from last year.

Newsom said the state is also working to address concerns Californians may have surrounding public safety power shutoffs. PG&E’s equipment has been blamed for causing a series of destructive wildfires in recent years.
