A local homeless activist wants Governor Jerry Brown to veto a new law that he says could force the hungry homeless to eat from garbage cans.
AB-2718 would require food given free to the homeless to be prepared in commercial kitchens. Keith McHenry, the co-founder of Food Not Bombs, says many groups who prepare and distribute food have no access to commercial facilities. Locally, Food Not Bombs uses the kitchen at India Joze in Santa Cruz, but McHenry says that isn’t expected to last as the restaurant is scheduled to be torn down within a year.
If Brown signs the bill into law, Food Not Bombs would then have to find a new kitchen or might have to stop feeding homeless people.
