Most Big Sur Condors Thought Safe But Need Help 08-26-20 17:54 DC

Biologists concerned about the fate of the Big Sur California Condors say 90 of the 100 birds have been located and found the be safe. The other 10 are thought to be safe, but have yet to be observed,

Wildlife biologist Joe Burnett was out in Big Sur on Wednesday using a radio direction-finder to search for California Condors missing in the wake of the Dolan Fire.

The fire has surpassed 20,000 acres and in the early morning hours of August 21, it came through Ventana Wildlife Society’s Condor Sanctuary.

Burnett said condor chicks have survived past fires at the sanctuary thanks to their parents choosing great locations for nests.

The active fire is preventing Burnett from getting into the sanctuary to check on the chicks. He is hopeful that the chicks’ parents have already returned to the nests to reunite with the chicks, but its information he won’t know until he can get into the remote area. Burnett suspects the other 10 missing birds are hiding out in canyons along the coast.
