By a one-vote margin, the Monterey City Council refused to pass an ordinance to protect renters until a new state law becomes effective on January 1st. That’s the date when the state will begin prohibiting no-fault evictions and limiting some rent increases.
Monterey County, Salinas, Seaside, and Santa Cruz County are among local governments who have passed such a ban. But a majority on the Monterey Council decided renters don’t need protection from landlords seeking to raise rents before the new state law kicks-in.
