Construction on a vacated lot in Monterey will begin today. The building on Alavarado Street in the downtown area has been empty since it was damaged by a fire in 2007. The construction project will include a new restaurant, café, retail store, and apartments.  A groundbreaking event for the new businesses will take place this evening. The project is expected to be completed by spring 2016.
