Officials say that will allow officers to encrypt their transmissions, thereby keeping criminals from using police scanners to their advantage. Naysayers are concerned that the encryption will reduce transparency for the agencies involved. Most law channels in Monterey county are expected to switch over by mid-June, however the fire channels are expected to remain open.
