May 5, 2016: Governor Brown Signs Law Raising Smoking Age

(10:26) SACRAMENTO – Governor Jerry Brown has signed legislation that will raise the legal age to buy tobacco from 18 to 21. On Wednesday, the Governor enacted five bills that not only increased the legal smoking age, but also put restrictions on the use of e-cigarettes in public places, expanded smoking bans in workplaces and schools, and raised licensing fees for tobacco sellers.The legislation will go into effect June 9. California is the second state, after Hawaii, to raise the smoking age to 21. (S.G.)
