(07:02) MARINA – The California Coastal Commission has ordered a Marina sand mining operation to close down. The Cemex Lapis Sand Plant dredges sand along the Monterey Bay to be later sold for the purpose of constructing roads and buildings. Sand mining has been directly associated with erosion and the destruction of wildlife habitat. The commission has sent a letter to Cemex, saying that their development is unpermitted and violates the coastal act. The company has until April 6 to respond to the letter. (S.G.)
