June 29, 2016: NOAA Reminding Residents to Give Young Seals Space

(08:36) CALIFORNIA – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is reminding California residents to not touch or pick up seal pups. This season, there have been at least five reported incidents of individuals finding lone seal pups and then illegally picking them up, believing the animals need help. NOAA officials say the encounters harm the pups and often lead to the animal’s death. Last year, at least five dozen cases of people picking up or feeding marine mammals were reported in California. In response, the NOAA has launched a campaign called “Share the Shore” to remind the public to stay at least 100 yards from young seals or other marine life found onshore. (S.G.)
