(08:18) SANTA CRUZ – The City of Santa Cruz is asking gardeners to vacate the Beach Flats Community Garden as it works to determine the future of the property. In October, the Seaside Company agreed to extend the city’s lease on the land occupied by the garden. During a closed door session earlier this month, the city council reportedly voted to require community members to vacate the garden’s site while they work with the Seaside Company to establish a permanent garden. Additionally, gardeners are being asked to return forms that agree to a proposal to make the garden 40 percent smaller. The decision has been met with opposition by Beach Flats community members. In response, garden advocates have composed and circulated a letter that confirms the gardeners’ desire to continue gardening on the same plots. The letter will be submitted to the city Monday afternoon. (S.G.)
