With the gateway plaza homeless encampment set to close in about a week… the Santa Cruz city council will today wrestle with the decision on where to put the campers.
It’s a complicated situation that’s left the council divided on a future plan. On one side… there’s mayor Martine Watkins, council members Cynthia Mathews and Donna Meyers, who seem to advocate closing the camp on April 17th and relocating the campers to existing shelters and using lodging vouchers for the rest.
While the rest of the council members advocate not relocating the campers until an alternative sanctioned shelter is established. Open session for the council begins at 2:30 this afternoon.
