Friday Open House To Discuss Safe Sleeping and Storage Site 03-27-19 07:30 DC

The City of Santa Cruz has invited the community to a discussion of the planned Safe Sleeping and Storage Site. The event will take place this Friday, March 29th from Noon until 2 PM. It will be held at the Police Department Community Room, 155 Center St.

Unlike most such events, the city is asking the public to RSVP by 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 28 to reserve a  seat. The email address for the RSVP is mbunch@cityofsantacruz.com.

The Safe Sleeping and Storage Site is slated to open mid-April in City Parking Lot 24 (Depot Park North Parking Lot accessible via Washington Street). It is a “dusk to dawn” program where homeless clients are allowed to enter into an enclosed, monitored space at a determined time in the evening to sleep for the night. Each morning, any tents or sleeping equipment will be taken down and the sleepers will vacate the site for the day.

The meeting will provide specifics on the Safe Sleeping and Storage Site, opportunity to ask questions of City staff, as well as an overview of the City and County’s Joint Action Plan for Homelessness.
