Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Deputies say heroic work by a cafeteria manager and staff may have kept a Wednesday stabbing incident from becoming much more serious. The incident occurred in the cafeteria at Cabrillo College around 11:45 Wednesday morning.
Investigators say a 19-year-old female student was stabbed while seated in the cafeteria. She fled and was taken to a trauma center in stable condition.
When deputies arrived, they found the cafeteria manager and other staff holding down the suspect, identified as Steven Wooding, who spent several years in a psychiatric facility after an assault on a Cabrillo staff member in 1994.
Wooding was booked into jail on a charge of attempted murder with bail set at $750,000.
In a statement, deputies thanked the brave manager of the cafeteria and the staff members who held Wooding until he could be taken into custody.
