The Watsonville City Council announced yesterday that it has no plans to ban the sale of “safe and sane” fireworks by local non-profits. Many residents were concerned because Fire Chief Pablo Barreto presented a report to the city council about the dangers of these fireworks. Watsonville is the only Santa Cruz County city to allow “safe and sane” fireworks, which neither leave the ground nor cause explosions. Last year, local permitted nonprofits earned $250,000 from firework sales.
