Esselen Tribe Reparations 08.10.2020 1045 5 js

The Esselen tribe of Monterey County recently acquired over 1,200 acres of ancestral land on the Big Sur Coast. Peter Colby, Program Director for the Western Rivers Conservancy, discuses the details in an interview on KSCOs Good Morning Monterey Bay.

“This is now our opportunity to bring it back to them. [the land is] Not on the coast, it’s a couple properties in, but has gorgeous views of the Ocean”, peter said. “And it looks at Pico Blanco, the center of the Esselen’s origin story, so it’s really sacred land for them”.

Colby went on to say that the money for bringing this land back to ownership of the native tribe came from a statewide voter-approved bond that funds grants for natural, culturial and historic resources across the state.
