The city of Watsonville (and the county of Monterey) are 2 of the 25 sanctuary cities (and counties) that have received warning letters from the U.S. Department Of Justice. The letters states that subpoenas could be issued if the cities and/or counties refuse to relinquish documents showing the citizenship, or immigration status of people in custody. Failure to comply could result in the justice department seeking the return of federal safety grant money.
