Monologue
Dr. Wallach starts the show outlining several health challenges that he contends are due to nutritional deficiencies. Also stating the numbers of where the U.S. ranks in health and longevity compared to other industrialized nations. While the U.S. spends more on health care every year than all of the other nations combined.
Pearls of Wisdom
Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story on a recent Consumer Report. The report from the Consumer Reports Health Rating Center states that children in ICUs (intensive care units) have a 20% higher risk of contracting a serious bloodstream infection than adult ICUs. Out of 92 that were rated using CDC (Centers for Disease Prevention and Control) data only five got the highest rating of 5. Twenty-four hospitals earned a 2 the second lowest rating. While the national average is 1.5 two hospitals received a one. Of all the central line bloodstream infections in ICUs nationally (12,000-28,000) 25% were fatal. The variation in the numbers stems from the fact that there are over 400 pediatric ICUs in the country but only about half publicly report infection rates.
