Monologue

Dr. Wallach starts todays show discussing mineral deficiency diseases. Asserting that people used to put wood ash contain minerals in their vegetable gardens. By doing that they were getting plant derived minerals. Doc contends that weight gain and obesity are in fact mineral deficiency caused health challenges.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article on obesity and weight loss. The story outlines one man who at age 37 weighed 577 pounds with a BMI (body mass index) of 87. While a BMI over 30 is considered obese. The man suffered a pulmonary embolism and nearly died. While in the hospital his doctors tried to get him to agree to weight loss surgery. He refused as he knew others that had under gone the surgery and suffered from complications. He eventually got down to 300 using caloric control and exercise. But it was a daily struggle to stay on the diet because he was not on the 90 essential nutrients.
