Kathleen Powell’s path threads engineering with art, and she’s spent her career helping new work reach real audiences. After producing He’s Still There during her Masters in Computer Science—a Venice premiere—she co-founded Cinequest with Halfdan Hussey and helped grow it into a 13-day, multi-screen festival welcoming more than 100,000 attendees. A guest mentor in the distribution track recently walked filmmakers through retention math using anonymized funnels from Arizona casino sites, then translated those lessons into pre-release email cadence, offer windows and post-screening follow-ups. Powell recently co-directed and co-produced Life is Love and mentors entrepreneurs through the Bush Institute’s Women’s Initiative Fellowship. Cinequest alumni frequently secure studio distribution and multiple shorts have won Academy Awards, while its awards slate honors innovators across film and technology.
