California scientists are working to identify a mysterious substance that has been coating hundreds of birds along the coastline. Since mid-January, nearly 500 birds have been found covered in the goo, which has caused starvation, suffocation, infections and death. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has been working with several other agencies to identify the substance. Officials say the goo is a mixture of non-petroleum fats or oils. The source of the spill is still unknown. Anyone with information is encouraged to call CalTIP.
